Colored Pencil!!

Thursday, December 4, 2008

I bought a brand new small moleskine and the cheapest colored pencils i could find. i'll fill this sketchbook with memory drawings from people i see in coffeeshops or on the train.

I saw a video of Stephen Silver where he told that you get most out of lifedrawing by drawing once, turning the paper, and them drawing the same thing from mind. I did this during the last lifedrawing in class and i think its a great thing to do.

I still remember the five poses I've drawn last monday and i think ive learned more than in all the sessions before. I drew every pose twice that way.

I decided to change my starbucks drawing routine a little. I used to draw the people while looking at them all the time. This time I observed first and then sketched from memory.

This way I am forced to simplify and caricature a lot more, cause I can't memorize all the tiny details.

The result are the first two images you see here. The rest is doodle from mind while in class.

Welcome to the Coffee Shop Sketch Group

Hello and welcome to the CSSG-Blog. This is all about drawing people in Coffee Shops.

This project is about having fun and not about promoting a certain coffeehouse or anything that involves money or commerce.

A few guidelines and ideas:

1. The drawing has to be made by you sitting (or standing) in a so called coffeeshop (starbucks, coffee fellows, sfcc and so on). The main focus is drawing, but if you want you can post photos or artworks all around Coffee Shop Culture, too.

2. All techniques are welcome.

3. It doesn't matter how good you are technically, if you're a starter or a pro, everybody welcome.

4. Draw the people there. Draw caricatures of them, draw realistic, draw abstract, just draw people. You get the idea.

5. You can post your drawings by adding a new entry. Please keep the Image Sizes small. Choose jpg with a middle compression (or what your drawing can "take") and a Size of not bigger than about 800x800, so the file won't be bigger than 100 kb. Use common sense, don't let it be bigger than neccessary.

6. This is about improving drawing skills, giving constructive critique via the comment function and having fun.

7. The whole thing is based on this Blogger-Platform. It's easy to understand and to get used to it. No advertising, fees, other subscriptions whatsoever.

I will send you an invitation to become an author for this blog. Then you'll be able to simply upload your drawings by adding new posts containing the images.
